Fishing in Genshin Impact is a simple system most players have honestly forgotten about. It was added in Version 2.1, and you only need a fishing rod, the right bait, and patience to catch all the available fish in Teyvat.
But what makes fishing worth it, aside from the need to complete your archives and collect all possible species? Here’s a guide that will get you started.
How to Unlock the Fishing System?
You must be at least AR 30 in order to access the Fishing system. First, you need to complete the Serenitea Pot quest and access the housing system; you can get this quest from Madame Ping.
If you have completed each of these prerequisites, you must speak with Katheryne in Mondstadt, who will give you the quest titled “Exploding Population.” Then, you need to go to the area outside of Mondstadt to talk to Nantuck. Speak to him and he will offer you a free fishing rod and bait. After speaking with him, you will also receive the Fruit Paste Bait recipe.
To accomplish the mission, follow him and catch both a Medaka and an Ornamental Fish. This quest will provide you 3 Hero’s Wit as well as 30,000 Mora.

Ornamental Fish
There are some unusual fish that are primarily utilized as decorations. These fish, called as Ornamental Fish, are ideally suited to the player’s custom-designed residential ponds in the Serenitea Pot. The game will frequently display what sort of fish the players have caught, making it simpler to detect what they’re hunting for later on.
They are, however, scarce and difficult to capture when compared to other types of fish. There is just a 10% to 15% chance of catching an ornamental fish. There will be a blue shining light in the water, signifying the presence of an Ornamental Fish. In addition, these fish will leap around frantically in comparison to normal ones.
All Fishing Bait Types
Genshin offers four bait variants, each ideal for a different species of fish. You can make as much bait as you want after getting the formula from any Fishing Association.

Fishing Spot Locations
There are more than 20 fishing spots on Teyvat. For now, it doesn’t appear like they are exclusive to normal fish or ornamental fish, so as you approach an area, you have an equal chance of finding either.
You may scare fish away by starting a battle nearby, but it takes a lot to frighten them. you’ll need to disrupt the water’s surface before properly frightening the fish away. If you managed to scare them away, you can teleport and then return to force a respawn.

Fishing Tips & Tricks
- Focus on collecting all kinds of bait first. This will be important if you want your fishing journey to be smooth-sailing. Not to mention, you can get all the recipes from the same Fishing Association. You won’t need to jump from region to region!
- Although there are fish that you can catch just by swimming in any body of water, there are designated fishing spots for these ones.
- Make sure that you’re standing near or on the edge of the fishing location. When users press the fishing place prompt, the game takes control of the camera. Following that, the view might quickly become constricted.
- Don’t throw the bait too near the fish. This can actually scare them away!
- Fish can disappear if not caught. Yes, there will be an invisible timer running while you’re trying to remember what bait works on what fish.
- The kind of fish that spawn in a fishing location is random. One location may have little fish one day and then solely yield flat fish the next. There is no discernible pattern.
- Unlock items such as region-specific fishing rods in Fishing Associations. These fishing rods will give you better chances of catching fish.
- Prioritize The Catch instead of the fishing rods. Players will fare better if they invest their captured fish in bait or acquire The Catch, a decent polearm that boosts the damage and critical rate of an elemental burst.
Genshin Impact’s fishing system might not be for everyone, but it’s something to keep in mind in case you want a change of pace from the never-ending farm for materials. Not only will you get items from the Fishing Associations in exchange for fish, you’d also get Ornamental Fish that can spruce up that lonely pond in your Serenitea Pot.
